Here's a flick that I knew I would have panned if I
saw it when it was released. But age did this one justice,
thanks to its incredible cast. Back in 1976, nobody knew who Robert Englund
was. But now it's neat to see him. He plays a hick
named "Buck" and does his best David Hess
impersonation. Others here we know from the horror film hall of
fame include William Finley, the "Phantom" of Brian
DePalma's "Phantom of the Paradise (1974)" and of
course Marilyn Burns, the survivor of Hooper's "Texas
Chainsaw Massacre (1974)." If you stood in line to see this baby when it was
released in theaters (if it even made it into theaters back
then) and you knew anything about horror films, I'm
sure you were expecting a terror trip on par with
"Texas Chainsaw." It had the same director and Marilyn Burns to boot.
And "Eaten Alive" actually has a similiar storyline. It
takes place in the South. It's got an Ed Gein character.
And it's got a bad ass killer with a unique set of teeth.
The only problem is it's no where near as terrifying
as Hooper's classic.
But it's got more nudity in it. Gotta love that.
The film is a hell of a lot better than anything Hooper
has directed in recent years. The night I rented this I
rented Hooper's "Crocodile (2000)," a waste of time and
money. Hard to believe this is the guy who made "Texas
Chainsaw." The DVD version of "Eaten Alive" released by Elite
Entertainment a few years back is now out of print. I
rented it at a Hollywood Video. It's still available on
Amazon.com. It costs about $22.46. Not a bad price.
Better get it while you can.
