By Stephen Pytak This is stupid fun with a few laugh-out loud moments.
I remember seeing the original Sid and Marty Krofft show as a kid. It
was this far-out adventure about a family who travels through a time
warp and ends up in some dinosaur valley populated by an ape race
and lizard-humaniods. Despite the crazy story elements, all involved for
the most part played it pretty straight, like the actors in early "Star Trek"
episodes.
The new film has all the original elements (improving them some great
sfx. The Sleestacks still look kinda cool) but there's a shift in tone. I thought
it was funny.
Will Ferrell and company make the material fresh by turning this into
a raunchy comedy. Not sure how the film would have turned out if the
powers-that-be decided to do something "serious." But it's hilarious
seeing Ferrell and company talking to the new "Cha-Ka" about drug
culture, Jesus and his sex life.
I'm not a Will Ferrell fan. I think this is the first time I saw one of his
flicks in the movies. Reason why I went is I liked the trailer. It had the scene
in it where his "Dr. Rick Marshall" is on the Today show, and he said he
financed his research into "time warps" with $50 million in taxpayer
dollars.
With the troubled economy the way it is, I couldn't help but think,
"God, this moron deserves whatever he gets." When I saw the film was
a redo of "Land of the Lost," I was intrigued. The "hero" wasn't a
nice father figure guy. "This guy's an asshole," I thought.
One of his co-stars, a "smart" T-Rex thinks so too. And the scenes with
"Grumpy" are some of the more memorable ones we'll see this summer
(which so far kind of sucks for movies).
This is the summer of "Wolverine: Origins," which was terrible, and
"Terminator: Salvation," which is just so-so. Honestly, I enjoyed "Land of
the Lost" more than those flicks.
