By Stephen Pytak Claudio Simonetti scores the third film in Argento's
Three Mother's trilogy with a driving beat, heavy strings
and haunting voices.
And there are musical cues which will remind fans of
Goblin's score for the first chapter in this series, "Suspiria."
The strings sometimes get you down deep, as if the bow
is being drawn around your guts. Effective stuff.
I would think it's difficult as all hell to compose any
kind of score to a sequel to Dario Argento's 1977 classic
film. Goblin's music for "Suspiria" is one of the greatest
horror scores ever composed.
Keith Emerson didn't do too bad, infusing the first
sequel, "Inferno (1980)," with gothic keyboards.
Simonetti was one of the members of Goblin back in the
day and I'm very glad Argento had him return to do the
score for "La Terza Madre."
When I heard the score isolated, prior to seeing the
film, I gave it four stars out of five. After seeing the film,
and how well it worked with it, I decided to give it the
full five stars.
Hearing it blast through the speakers at The Ritz
at the Bourse in Philadelphia on June8, 2008 was quite
amazing. There's nothing like hearing a Simonetti score
like that.
I ordered the CD from Movie Grooves, Oxford, U.K.
And I've been listening to it while sitting home writing
fiction. I'm writing a thriller with a lot of horror elements,
and it's given me some inspiration. I might have to keep
this disc on the stack near the computer.
