This is an O.K. film, but the two leads don't
have the best chemistry and the third act goes on
way too long.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are great in this
flick, that is when they don't share the screen.
Pitt was better in his scenes actually. I've never
seen him in a comic role like this. Here he's playing
the straight man exchanging lines with Vince
Vaughn, then the fall guy tripping over greens
in his front yard while trying to sneak in and avoid
being shot. He held his own well, but I wouldn't
have paid $9 to see the film first run if Angelina
wasn't one of the leads.
The poster featuring her "Mrs. Smith" character
raised eyebrows when it appeared in movie theater
lobbies a few months back. The weekend I saw the
film, there were mini versions of the "Mrs. Smith"
poster and "Mr. Smith" poster in the theater lobby.
I managed to pick up a "Mrs. Smith" before they
were gone. A stack of Pitt posters remained, and
were probably donated to the local SPCA.
Jolie was pretty good. Sexy as always. But I can't
say much else about her character. Jolie holds her
own O.K. with what she's got to work with. I dunno.
Maybe I just didn't get much of a kick seeing her
play a married assassin.
It wasn't because there wasn't any sex in the film.
That wouldn't have helped because she and Pitt
didn't click well on celluloid, this time out anyway.
When they're together here, there's just something
that doesn't work.
Well, I should mention the lack of chemistry
works well at the top of the show, where we see
the two attending a session with a marraige
counselor.
There was an extended sex scene that was cut
for a PG-13 rating, according to IMDB. And, sure,
I would have liked to see it. Who wouldn't?
The only sparks that light up the screen are the
ones caused by the bullets bouncing off the kitchen
range in the film's best gunfight.
Some of the action scenes were excellent, but
after the incident where the Smiths have their big
showdown at home, they wake up the next morning,
are attacked by assassins and the house blows up,
I was satisfied and was hoping for the credits.
Instead, we get another 45 minutes of car crashes
and a very unnecessary showdown with an army
in a value mart.
This was a good concept for a film, but all the
elements didn't fall in just right, even though it has
a dream cast.
I'm sure their sex scene will be on the extended
DVD.
