Starts out like "Prom Night," then turns
into "Deadbeat at Dawn."
But if you have a sense of humor, this
is a little gem you want to have in your
collection.
It was made by some alumnae from
George E. Romero's "Night of the Living
Dead (1968)."
The director, Bill Hinzman, was the lead
zombie. The writer, John Russo, was co-writer
and also a zombie.
I didn't even know this film existed until
I saw it was showing at Exhumed Films in
Pitman, N.J. last year. I didn't make the
show, but was curious. I found the DVD
the other week and since it was a Shriek Show
release, I decided to gamble.
I wasn't sorry I did. It didn't shake down
the way a lot of slasher films usually do. The
last act is very different. And it appealed to
my sense of humor.
It helped that some of the actors were fun
to watch. We really got a kick out of "Mace"
who was played by Tom E. Desrocher.
He's knocking up high school girls one
minute and abusing his biker bitch the next.
He digs hanging out at the local tittie bar,
and selling dope to afford his bad-ass big
80s leather look.
This guy's a hoot. And watching him get
his in the end was worth the $20 I paid for
the disc.
The film's story doesn't have any real
theme, and there's no point really, unless
you want to consider the motives of the killer,
who enjoyed baptizing his victims in water.
Maybe the story's about a cleansing of
the community.
Or maybe it's just an excuse to watch some
naked girls get killed.
